The Leader of the Council – Regeneration Cabinet Member – Minutes – 17 January 2012

14  (14) UNIVERSITY TECHNICAL COLLEGE – The Head of Regeneration and Planning submitted a report to provide the Cabinet Member with an update on the application to develop a University Technical College (UTC) within North Lincolnshire.  The report sought support in principle for the proposal, subject to consultation, agreement on the location and an assessment on the impacts this would have upon existing schools.

A tight timescale had been set for the submission of bids, and following an initial consultation exercise it was necessary for an urgent decision to be taken to meet the deadline of 17 January 2012.

The Head of Regeneration and Planning explained that the development of the South Humber Bank for renewable energy would provide major employment opportunities within the engineering and manufacturing sectors and it was considered that the transformation of the North Lincolnshire economy as a centre for renewables would create a substantial skills shortage for engineering skills within the area.  It was anticipated that a University Technical College would be one way that the council could address the skills challenge.

Resolved – (a) That the proposal for a UTC within North Lincolnshire be supported in principle, and (b) that a letter of support for the bid be endorsed.
