Highways & Neighbourhoods Cabinet Member – Minutes – 23 October 2012

101 (18) PROPOSED RELAXATION OF CAR PARKING CHARGES FOR LATE NIGHT CHRISTMAS SHOPPING EVENTS – The Director of Places submitted an urgent report seeking approval for the relaxation of car parking charges as in previous years to coincide with the Late Night Christmas Shopping Events in Scunthorpe and Brigg (five in Scunthorpe and one in Brigg).

In previous years, the council had relaxed charges for car parking from 4.00 pm on the evenings when the Late Night Shopping Events were taking place (seven in total last year) in the lead up to Christmas.  This intent was to encourage shoppers into the town centres in a key shopping period.

Any monies taken through the ticket machines after 4.00 pm had been donated to charity (The Mayor’s Appeal Fund/Brigg Mayor’s Appeal Fund).  The public had been advised of the fact if they wished to make a contribution.

The Late Night Christmas Shopping Events this year were taking place following the switch on of lights on Thursday 22 November 2012 in Scunthorpe.

The matter was urgent in order to meet accompanying publicity and marketing documentation notification deadlines.

Resolved – (a) That the proposed temporary suspension of car park charges after 4.00 pm on 22 and 29 November and 6, 13 and 20 December 2012, in Scunthorpe and Ashby, and on 7 December in Brigg be approved, and (b) that any revenue received be donated to the relevant Mayors’ Appeal Funds.
