148  (25)WOODLANDS CREMATORIUM PROPOSED BUILDING REFURBISHMENT AND ALTERATIONS – The Director of Places submitted a report seeking approval for building refurbishment and alterations at the Crematorium.

This year Woodlands Crematorium celebrated its 50th anniversary.  The anniversary seemed a good opportunity to also address a number of building related issues that would enhance the crematorium and the customer experience, such as:

  • Refurbishing the chapel to include new floor coverings, improvements to lighting, new ceiling tiles, re-staining pews and general redecoration.
  • Remodelling the existing reception and office to allow customers to be taken to private areas to discuss sensitive and emotional issues.
  • Minor improvements to the rear of the building to assist with the transferring of floral arrangements to the appropriate area effectively and more sympathetically.

The estimated cost of the works was outlined in the report.  The crematorium had an enhancement fund generated from donations received from the public.  The fund in the past had provided a new waiting room and water feature within the crematorium.  The report detailed the current balance of the fund.  The shortfall of the works costs could be met from the council’s property minor works budget.

Resolved – That the use of the enhancement fund, to support the refurbishment and alterations, as outlined in the report, be approved.
