Environment Cabinet Member – Minutes – 19th July 2016

6 (6) MEMORIAL SAFETY IN COUNCIL CEMETERIES – The Director of Places submitted a report seeking approval of the Memorial Safety Policy.

Nationally a number of high profile incidents had occurred as a result of unstable memorials, including a small number of fatalities.

Bereavement Service staff had locally undertaken some testing.  However, recently concerns were raised by grounds staff over some memorials in Barton Cemetery.

The council had taken some action to make a small number of memorials safe, in areas of risk such as pathways.  This indicated that an approved Memorial Safety Policy may be needed for around 30,000 headstones within our responsibility.

Resolved – That the adoption of the Memorial Safety Policy be approved.
