Commercial and Safer, Greener & Cleaner Spaces Cabinet Members – Minutes – 13 July 2018 (Jnt)

1 (1) CROWLE PEATLAND RAILWAY SOCIETY – The Executive Director: Commercial submitted a report seeking approval that North Lincolnshire Council would lease land at Dole Road, Crowle, to the Crowle Peatland Railway Society for a nominal value.

North Lincolnshire Council was the lead body for the Isle of Axholme and Hatfield Chase Landscape Partnership, which was Heritage Lottery Funded. This partnership included a number of partners such as Natural England, Doncaster Metropolitan Council and the Crowle Peatland Railway Society.

One project ran by the Landscape Partnership was the restoration of locomotives once used in the extraction of Peat from Hatfield, Thorne and Crowle Moors. Funding for this project had been received from North Lincolnshire Council, Heritage Lottery Fund and SSE Windfarm Fund.

It was envisaged that the Peatland Railway would help residents and visitors to learn and understand the heritage of the site and the Isle of Axholme.

Planning permission was given for the erection of a Romney hut and 100m of track on 29 June 2017 which was on council owned land. The Romney hut had been completed and work to install the track was scheduled to start soon.

The use of the Romney hut should achieve the landscape Partnership’s aim of reconnecting residents with their local landscape and cultural heritage. The Crowle Peatland Railway Society had signed an agreement with the Heritage Lottery Fund to this end.

A map of the land to be leased was identified at Appendix 1 of the report.

Resolved – That the lease of the land to Crowle Peatland Railway Society for a peppercorn rent over a period of 50 years be approved.
