Leader of the Council – Minutes – 13 December 2011

10  (10)  PROPOSED CHANGE OF NAME – PITTWOOD HOUSE, SCUNTHORPE – The Director of Corporate and Community Services submitted a report which considered the proposed change of name for Pittwood House, Scunthorpe.

Following local government reorganisation North Lincolnshire Council came into being on 1 April 1996, at which time the Civic Centre, Scunthorpe was renamed Pittwood House, by Decision Record dated 26 March, 1996, effective from 1 April 1996.

Many of the buildings operated by North Lincolnshire Council were undergoing “worksmart” which was aimed at concentrating all the North Lincolnshire staff in four core buildings, which would enable those buildings no longer required, to be declared surplus and disposed of.  The worksmart initiative at Pittwood House included the Registrars moving from their accommodation on Oswald Road to the Civic Suite within the building and it was anticipated that this would enable couples to tailor whether they wanted a larger or smaller wedding ceremony to suit their particular needs.

It was considered that the new services provided an opportunity to change the name of the building to reflect its wider future role, and reflected a more public facing building.  The original name of the Civic Centre was considered more appropriate for this wider use and that it would resonate more clearly.

Resolved – That Pittwood House, Scunthorpe be renamed the Civic Centre, Scunthorpe with effect from 1 January, 2012.

Where there is no report this is because it is exempt, as it contains information which is considered to be of a confidential nature, as detailed in the Local Government (Access to Information) Act.
