Asset Management, Culture & Housing Cabinet Member – Minutes – 14 January 2015

130      (30) SURPLUS LAND AND PROPERTY – The Director of Places submitted an urgent report seeking approval to declare formally eleven property assets surplus to the requirements of the council.

The matter was urgent in order that the Examination in Public of the Housing and Employment Development Plan Document could be supported.

The council had a number of property holdings that were no longer required to support the provision of operational services. As such, they were all potentially available for alternative use, including the option of redevelopment towards achieving the council’s organisational priorities.

The Building Schools for the Future programme saw the creation of the Melior Community Academy. As a result, the site of the former South Leys School on Enderby Road, Scunthorpe was no longer required for use as a school. Although other council services were delivered from the site, there was significant land that was surplus to the council’s need.

A new depot was developed at Northampton Road, Scunthorpe in 2012. As a result, the former Neighbourhood Services depot at Station Road, Scunthorpe was vacated. It was now surplus to operational requirements.

The ‘Worksmart’ initiative resulted in the Brumby Resource Centre located along East Common Lane, Scunthorpe becoming fully vacant in 2014. Consultation was ongoing regarding the future use of the site, but initial feedback appeared to support some potential redevelopment.

The report also detailed additional properties that were also surplus to the requirements of the council.

Resolved – That the eleven property assets, as detailed in the report, be formally declared surplus to the requirements of the council.
