People Scrutiny Panel – 26 September 2012

PRESENT:-  Councillor Marper in the Chair

Councillors Collinson (Vice-Chair), Alcock, Evison and Swift.

Statutory Co-opted Members: Mrs A Dunkerley (Parent Governor Representative) and Mr W Egan and Mrs W Witter (Church Representatives).

Councillor Whiteley attended the meeting in accordance with the provisions of Procedure Rule 1.36 (b).

The panel met at the Civic Centre, Scunthorpe.

126  DECLARATIONS OF DISCOSABLE PECUNIARY INTERESTS AND PERSONAL OR PERSONAL AND PREJUDICIAL INTERESTS AND DECLARATIONS OF WHIPPING ARRANGEMENTS (IF ANY) – There were no declarations of disclosable pecuniary interests and personal or personal and prejudicial interests –

No whip was declared.

127  PUBLIC REQUESTS TO SPEAK– There were no requests received.

128  REVIEW OF ENSURING YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE THE RELEVANT SKILLS TO MOVE INTO EMPLOYMENT– The Chairman welcomed Pete Thorpe Assistant Director – School Improvement, to the meeting.  Pete had been invited to the panel meeting to update members on what local businesses in the area may be looking for, and what was being carried out in North Lincolnshire schools and colleges by giving young people the skills for moving on into employment.  Members discussed a wide range of related issues, including efforts to engage with Heads and colleges, also the skills required by employers, encouraging teachers to work in various industry settings, and work experience opportunities.

Resolved – (a) That Pete Thorpe be thanked for his attendance, and for answering members’ questions, and (b) that the situation be noted.

129  REVIEW ON SERVICES PROVIDED TO SCHOOLS – The Chairman welcomed Becky McIntyre- Head of Resources, to the meeting. Becky informed the members of the work that had been undertaken to provide schools with   knowledge and information required in order to access council services for schools.  She indicated that schools did still have the choice of where they bought services from, and became more independent when moving to academy status. She also informed the members that various contracts had been won and lost, and that a lot of work had been carried out in the ‘services to schools brochure’ that had been distributed to all schools and academies.

Resolved – That this review been look into further.
